This is no cheap LCD TV, it’s been built with quality in mind. LCD TV reviews have given this model a big thumbs up which isn’t a surprise considering the techie bits that Samsung have crammed into it. Sure, some manufacturers will resort to anything to get a sale, according to the Samsung website the LE40B505 range of LCD’s will “…uplift you spirt…”! We’re not sure about that, but it is a pretty stunning HDTV.

Enough! Here’s the specs:

For a start, and if you haven’t already guessed, this TV is HD ready (1080p Full HD as opposed to the sort of the ‘halfway there’ 720p resolution). As you’d expect from a television from Samsung, you get to experience some pretty spectacular rendering of colour and detail.

The Dynamic Contrast Ratio or 10,000:1 isn’t the highest in the HDTV market but it does get significant boost by using what Samsung call their “Digital Dynamic Contrast”. DDC is controlled by a self-adjusting backlit panel that changes the power output to the flat panel This internal dimming or brightening of the LCD backlight means the Samsung LE40B550A5 can control the depth of black hues and bright images = a clearer natural image!

This image enhancement features also get a boost from Samsung’s proprietary DNIe+ technology. Put simply, the advanced colour and motion optimisers creates a pretty stunning depth of detail giving you incredibly lifelike images and a deeper depth of colour.

Entertainment Mode – this feature allows you to optimise the TV for movies, games and sports using 3 preset hot-keys. Simply flick between the different modes and choose the best settings.

The Samsung range of HD TV’s also include Wide Colour Enhancer 2. The blurb from their site says this: “Images are saturated with vivid, natural colour due to the expanded range of colour expression.” Basically, it’s a way of enhancing images that look weak.

With the Samsung LE40B550A5 you get 4 HDMI connections (3 rear, one on the side). Nowadays, you can’t have enough HD inputs for games consoles, media centres etc. One nice touch here is the addition of Anynet+ (HDMI CEC) which lets you you to control all connected AV devices from one remote control, taking away the pile of controls on your armchair!
